Honeywell Powers AMIGO LNG Terminal in Mexico
Honeywell will provide its advanced liquefied natural gas (LNG) process and automation technologies to the AMIGO LNG export terminal in Guaymas, Sonora. This facility, a joint venture of Epcilon LNG LLC and LNG Alliance Pte Ltd., aims to produce and export up to 7.8 million tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG. By combining process technology and automation, Honeywell will help optimize production, reduce downtime, and enhance operational reliability.
Modular Pretreatment Technology for Efficient Operations
The terminal will adopt Honeywell’s modular LNG pretreatment technology, designed to remove impurities before liquefaction. This approach extends equipment lifespan, prevents unplanned shutdowns, and enhances reliability. The modular design also reduces construction risks, enables faster installation, and allows easier future expansion. From an engineering perspective, this modular strategy represents a shift toward smarter, scalable LNG facilities.
Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS) for Enterprise-wide Oversight
Honeywell’s ICSS and Experion® distributed control system provide centralized operational control across the entire AMIGO LNG terminal. These systems integrate advanced fire, gas, and surveillance safety features to detect hazards in real time and trigger emergency responses. As an industrial automation engineer, I recognize that ICSS integration is critical for reducing operational complexity and improving situational awareness in large-scale LNG operations.
Accelerating Project Delivery and Global Market Competitiveness
Dr. Muthu Chezhian, CEO of LNG Alliance, highlights that Honeywell’s technologies accelerate project construction and delivery while enhancing operational efficiency. The AMIGO LNG terminal is positioned to deliver LNG competitively to global markets, reinforcing Mexico’s role in international energy trade. From a strategic perspective, integrating automation and modular pretreatment aligns engineering efficiency with commercial objectives.
Supporting Mexico’s Energy Security and Economic Growth
The AMIGO LNG terminal aligns with Mexico’s “Plan Sonora” strategy, aiming to establish Sonora as a regional energy hub. Beyond energy security, the project contributes to local economic development and strengthens Mexico’s presence in global LNG markets. In my view, projects like this demonstrate how advanced automation and modular process technologies can balance operational excellence with societal and economic benefits.
Honeywell’s Legacy in LNG Technology
Honeywell has a proven track record, pretreating roughly 40% of global LNG, automating over 80 baseload LNG trains, and providing liquefaction technology for two-thirds of worldwide capacity. Modular LNG solutions allow off-site construction, which reduces risks and shortens timelines. This approach exemplifies how industrial automation can transform the pace and efficiency of large-scale energy projects.
