Profinet / EtherNet-IP Deterministic Networks and Industrial Communication Architecture

The 1794-ADN operates as a DeviceNet communication interface between the network scanner/controller and FLEX I/O backplane modules. The adapter manages cyclic and explicit message exchange through the DeviceNet interface while providing FlexBus communication to connected digital, analog, and specialty I/O modules.

The module converts external 24 VDC supply input into 5 VDC FlexBus power for local FLEX I/O module operation. Network node addressing and communication parameters are configured through onboard rotary switches or DeviceNet software configuration tools such as RSNetWorx for DeviceNet.

The FLEX I/O architecture supports I/O density scaling by allowing a single adapter to control multiple terminal base modules on the same DIN rail installation. DeviceNet communication operation supports selectable network speeds of 125 Kbps, 250 Kbps, and 500 Kbps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many FLEX I/O modules can the 1794-ADN adapter support?
A: The adapter supports data exchange with up to 8 FLEX I/O modules installed on the local FlexBus rail.

Q: Does the 1794-ADN provide electrical isolation between DeviceNet and FlexBus circuits?
A: The module includes isolation protection with a rated continuous isolation voltage of 50 V and factory testing at 1,930 VDC for 60 s.

Q: What mounting methods are supported for the module?
A: The unit supports installation on a 35 mm DIN rail or direct panel mounting according to system mechanical requirements.

Field Installation Guidelines

  • Mount the adapter on a correctly installed 35 mm DIN rail or secured panel surface before connecting field wiring.
  • Maintain separation between DeviceNet communication cables and high-voltage power conductors to reduce electrical interference.
  • Connect DeviceNet wiring using the specified 5-pin open style connector and verify network polarity before energizing the system.
  • Ensure the 24 VDC supply wiring uses appropriate industrial grounding and protection practices.
  • Verify rotary switch settings or software-defined node parameters before placing the module into network service.
  • Confirm FlexBus terminal base alignment and mechanical engagement before installing connected FLEX I/O modules.
  • Use proper shield termination practices according to the DeviceNet network installation requirements.
