Deterministic DeviceNet Drive Communication

The 20C-DPI1 provides an internal DPI communication path between PowerFlex drives and DeviceNet master controllers. The module supports cyclic I/O messaging for real-time drive commands, including start/stop control, speed reference transmission, drive status monitoring, and feedback data acquisition.

The DeviceNet interface supports CAN-based network communication with selectable data rates of 125 Kbps, 250 Kbps, and 500 Kbps. Auto-baud detection allows the module to identify the active network communication speed without manual parameter adjustment.

The module supports Explicit Messaging for drive parameter access and configuration functions. Up to eight DataLinks can be assigned for high-speed exchange of selected drive parameters between the drive and host controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the 20C-DPI1 installed externally or internally?
A: The 20C-DPI1 is an internal communication option board installed directly into the compatible PowerFlex drive control pod communication slot.

Q: What type of DeviceNet messages are supported by the module?
A: The module supports both Explicit Messaging for parameter access and Implicit I/O Messaging for real-time drive control and monitoring.

Q: Does the module require an external power supply?
A: The module receives internal power from the drive bus at 5 VDC and uses DeviceNet network power supplied through the communication connection.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the 20C-DPI1 according to the PowerFlex drive hardware installation procedure and verify that the drive power source is isolated before accessing the internal communication slot.

Connect the DeviceNet wiring using the specified removable terminal block and maintain separation between communication wiring and high-voltage motor or power conductors to reduce electrical interference.

Terminate and shield the DeviceNet network according to the applicable DeviceNet installation standard. Connect cable shields using approved grounding practices while avoiding ground loops between multiple control cabinets.

After installation, verify Network and Module LED status indicators, confirm DeviceNet node communication, and validate drive parameter exchange before placing the drive into operational service.
