TMR Safety Monitoring and Trip Execution

The T8442C uses Triple Modular Redundancy to process speed and acceleration signals through independent monitoring channels. The architecture supports SIL 3 safety functions, continuous online fault tolerance, self-testing, and hot-swap module replacement.

Each monitoring group provides three TMR speed input channels and two quad-redundant output drive structures. The three groups allow the module to process speed protection functions for up to three separate turbine trains.

The module operates independently from conventional process control loops. Consequently, over-speed and over-acceleration trip decisions remain assigned to the dedicated safety monitoring path.

Supported inputs include active speed probes and passive variable reluctance sensors. Sensor selection must match the associated T8846 speed input FTA and installed field wiring configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What supply voltage does the T8442C require?
A: The module operates from 20 to 32 VDC, with 24 VDC nominal supply provided through the backplane.

Q: Can the T8442C be replaced while the Trusted system remains operational?
A: The supplied data specifies hot-swap replacement capability. Replacement procedures must follow the applicable Trusted system maintenance documentation.

Q: How many speed monitoring channels are provided?
A: Each of the three monitoring groups provides three TMR speed input channels, supporting up to three turbine trains.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the T8442C in a compatible Trusted T8300 Controller Chassis and verify correct mechanical seating before energizing the system.

Use the specified T8846 Speed Input FTA and T8891 Speed Output FTA for the corresponding field signal interfaces.

Separate speed probe wiring from high-current power conductors and switching circuits to reduce electromagnetic interference and induced transients.

Maintain consistent cable shielding and grounding practices according to the Trusted system installation documentation. Avoid creating unintended shield current paths between field termination points and controller chassis grounds.

Verify supply polarity, backplane seating, field termination, and probe wiring before commissioning. Confirm that active and passive variable reluctance sensors match the configured input interface.

After installation, perform the applicable diagnostic and channel verification procedures before placing over-speed or over-acceleration protection into service.
