ProSoft Communication and Diagnostic Features

The MVI56E-MCM provides Modbus master/slave communication through a ControlLogix-compatible single-slot interface. The Ethernet port operates at 10/100 MB and supports automatic cable crossover detection for network configuration and diagnostics.

ProSoft Discovery Service can locate the module on the Ethernet network and assign a temporary IP address for initial access. The four-character scrolling display reports module version, IP address, port settings, communication status, and error information.

The module provides user-definable data memory mapping for up to 10,000 16-bit registers. This mapping determines how Modbus data is exchanged with the ControlLogix backplane application.

The module also supports RIUP operation. However, removal or insertion under power should follow the applicable ControlLogix chassis and site procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What backplane current does the MVI56E-MCM require?
A: The module requires 800 mA at 5 VDC and 3 mA at 24 VDC from the ControlLogix backplane.

Q: Can the MVI56E-MCM communicate as both a Modbus master and slave?
A: Yes. The supplied specifications identify the communication module as supporting Modbus Master and Modbus Slave operation.

Q: Does the module support operation while being removed or inserted under power?
A: Yes. The MVI56E-MCM supports RIUP, subject to the applicable ControlLogix chassis installation procedures.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the module in a compatible 1756 ControlLogix chassis slot and verify backplane power capacity before commissioning. Confirm that the available backplane current supports the specified 5 VDC and 24 VDC loads.

Connect the Ethernet interface using suitable industrial network cabling and maintain separation from high-voltage power and high-current switching conductors. Use the module's Ethernet diagnostics and LED indications to verify network configuration and module status.

Route Modbus communication wiring separately from power conductors where practical, particularly where drives, contactors, or other switching equipment generate electrical noise. Terminate cable shields according to the communication network design and plant grounding practice.

Before removing or inserting the module under power, verify that the chassis and installation procedure permit RIUP operation. After installation, check the ERR, APP, and OK indicators and review the scrolling diagnostic display for communication or configuration faults.

For the MVI56E-MCMXT temperature-rated variant, use the applicable environmental specification rather than the standard MVI56E-MCM operating range.
