Description

Configured for ASCII serial protocol conversion in CompactLogix 1769 systems, the ProSoft MVI69-GSC (MVI69-GSC Generic Serial ASCII Network Interface Module) provides direct physical/electrical execution. This single-slot module installs directly into the local backplane to route serial data streams up to 115.2k baud directly into process memory without processor overhead. The module features one dedicated configuration port alongside two fully isolated application ports supporting RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 physical layer signal paths.

Protocol Conversion Latencies & Isolation Properties

The MVI69-GSC delivers low protocol conversion latencies when translating raw ASCII data streams into structured input/output register tables for the 1769 processor. Designed with 500 V optical isolation between the serial channels and the 1769 backplane bus, the hardware prevents ground loops, common-mode noise corruption, and high-voltage field surges from propagating to the primary controller. Jumpers on the module allow precise selection of termination resistors and signal level configurations (RS-232 handshaking vs. RS-485 half-duplex / RS-422 full-duplex differential drives), ensuring signal integrity across long serial line runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the maximum distance the module can be placed from the 1769 system power supply?

A: The MVI69-GSC has a Power Supply Distance Rating of 2. It must be installed within 2 slots of the system power supply on a 1769 bus or 1769-L43 / 1769-L45 CompactLogix controller system.

Q: Can the application serial ports be hot-swapped while the CompactLogix rack is powered?

A: No. The 1769 backplane architecture does not support RIUP (Removal and Insertion Under Power). Power to the 1769 bus must be disconnected before installing or removing the MVI69-GSC module to prevent hardware damage.

Field Installation Guidelines

  1. Power off the 1769 chassis before inserting or removing the module. Ensure the module locking lever is in the open position prior to seating.
  2. Verify that hardware jumpers for Port 1 and Port 2 are set correctly for the intended physical layer (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485) before installing the module into the rack slot.
  3. Align the module card guide with the adjacent module or power supply slots, slide the module firmly into place, and lock the upper and lower panel latches.
  4. Route serial lines using shielded twisted-pair cabling. Connect cable shields to a single-point earth ground (PE) at the panel entry point to prevent signal noise and ground currents from entering the communication ports.
  5. Do not exceed the maximum baud rate limit of 115.2k baud, and maintain proper end-of-line termination (120 ohm) on all RS-485 network segments.
