Serial Protocol Conversion and Port Isolation

The MVI94-MCM provides separate configuration and application serial interfaces for Modbus communication management. PRT1 uses RS-232 with hardware handshaking for configuration functions.

PRT2 supports RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 through jumper selection for application-side serial communication. The application interface provides 500 V optical isolation from the Flex I/O backplane.

The module supports Modbus function codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15, and 16. Command processing supports up to 100 commands per port, while the register capacity is specified at 5000 maximum.

The module transfers data through the 1794 Flex I/O backplane with a specified current load of 20 mA at 5 VDC. Therefore, backplane loading should be included when calculating the available FlexBus current budget.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the MVI94-MCM in an available single-slot position within the compatible 1794 Flex I/O assembly.

Verify the selected PRT2 jumper configuration before connecting RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 field wiring. Do not change interface selection while energized.

Route serial communication wiring separately from high-voltage power conductors and high-current switching circuits. Maintain appropriate physical separation where parallel routing could introduce electromagnetic interference.

For shielded serial cables, terminate shielding according to the plant grounding standard and avoid creating unintended ground loops. RS-485 installations should maintain correct polarity and termination practices for the connected network topology.

Verify the external 12 to 24 VDC supply and calculated current requirement before energizing the module. Include the 20 mA at 5 VDC backplane load in the Flex I/O power budget.
