Protocol Conversion and Network Isolation

The PLX31-EIP-PND operates as an EtherNet/IP adapter or scanner while functioning as a PROFINET RT device. Data exchanged between both networks uses gateway-managed memory mapping rather than native protocol translation within either PLC.

Two RJ45 Ethernet interfaces provide electrical isolation between the EtherNet/IP and PROFINET network segments. Therefore, each interface can remain connected to its respective subnet without directly combining the physical Ethernet segments.

The EtherNet/IP interface supports multiple CIP I/O connections with up to 500 bytes of input and output data per connection. The PROFINET interface supports up to 1440 bytes of input and output data.

The SD card interface stores configuration information for replacement procedures. A configured replacement unit can therefore restore stored configuration without requiring computer-based parameter entry.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can the two Ethernet ports be connected to separate network segments?

A: Yes. The supplied specifications identify the two RJ45 ports as electrically isolated, with separate EtherNet/IP and PROFINET network functions.

Q: What power supply range does the gateway accept?

A: The specified input range is 10 VDC to 36 VDC, with 24 VDC identified as the nominal supply voltage.

Q: What are the maximum stated PROFINET I/O data sizes?

A: The supplied specifications state up to 1440 bytes of input data and 1440 bytes of output data.

Field Installation Guidelines

  • Mount the gateway on a standard 35 mm DIN rail inside a suitable industrial control enclosure.
  • Verify the DC supply polarity and confirm that the applied voltage remains within the specified 10 VDC to 36 VDC range.
  • Connect the EtherNet/IP and PROFINET cables to their designated isolated RJ45 ports.
  • Maintain physical separation between network wiring and high-current motor, contactor, and switching-power conductors.
  • Use shielded Ethernet cabling where required by the installed network design and terminate shields according to the applicable panel grounding scheme.
  • Avoid creating unintended shield-to-ground paths between separately isolated network segments.
  • Verify link speed, duplex negotiation, IP addressing, and controller-side protocol configuration before enabling cyclic I/O exchange.
  • Retain the configured SD card with the equipment documentation when using the configuration-recovery function.
  • Confirm the gateway's operating temperature and vibration environment against the specified limits before installation.
  • After commissioning, verify input and output data mapping independently from both the EtherNet/IP and PROFINET controllers.
