Automate 2026 has demonstrated the rapidly expanding influence of robotics, artificial intelligence, and industrial automation technologies across global industries. Held from June 22-25 at McCormick Place in Chicago, the event attracted more than 50,000 attendees and 1,230 exhibitors, becoming the largest edition in the show’s history.

Compared with the previous year’s event in Detroit, attendance increased by approximately 11%, while exhibition space expanded to 425,000 square feet. This growth reflects a broader industrial trend: manufacturers are no longer viewing automation as an optional upgrade but as a necessary strategy for improving productivity, flexibility, and competitiveness.

From my perspective as an industrial automation engineer, the scale of Automate 2026 represents more than just a successful exhibition. It indicates that automation is moving from traditional factory optimization toward a broader intelligent manufacturing ecosystem involving AI, robotics, digital systems, and autonomous decision-making.

Industrial AI and Robotics Become the Core Themes of Automation Development

The 2026 event highlighted several technologies shaping the next generation of industrial systems, including industrial AI, machine vision, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), motion control, sensing technologies, and intelligent software platforms.

More than 200 industry experts participated in keynote sessions and technical discussions covering industrial transformation, workforce development, supply chain optimization, and automation adoption. Major technology companies, including robotics manufacturers, automation suppliers, and industrial software providers, demonstrated solutions designed to connect physical equipment with advanced data-driven control systems.

A significant change observed at Automate 2026 is the increasing integration between robotics hardware and artificial intelligence. Modern industrial robots are no longer limited to repetitive programmed operations. Through AI-based perception, vision systems, and adaptive control algorithms, robotic platforms are becoming capable of handling more complex and variable production environments.

In my view, humanoid robots will not immediately replace conventional industrial robots. Instead, they are likely to complement existing automation systems in environments where human-like movement, mobility, and adaptability provide advantages.
