Mitsubishi Electric Accelerates Local Sourcing and Global Expansion at Pune Factory

Mitsubishi Electric Strengthens Local Manufacturing in India

Mitsubishi Electric plans to double the local sourcing of components for its factory automation systems (FAS) plant in Talegaon, Pune, within the next five years. Currently, nearly 80% of components are imported, but the company targets 40–50% local supply, signaling India’s growing role as a strategic manufacturing hub.

As an industrial automation engineer, I see this initiative not just as a supply chain adjustment but as a strategic move to integrate India into global production networks, leveraging local engineering expertise and cost efficiencies.

Capacity Expansion and Production Plans

The Pune facility, operational since December 2023, currently runs at about 45% capacity. Mitsubishi Electric aims to reach 75–80% utilization by 2027 as more products are introduced. This phased ramp-up enables optimized processes, enhanced quality, and a gradual shift from imports to local components without disrupting ongoing operations.

From my perspective, this approach balances production scale-up with quality assurance, which is crucial in automation manufacturing where precision and reliability are non-negotiable.

Export Potential Beyond Local Markets

Once the Pune plant reaches optimal capacity utilization, Mitsubishi Electric plans to explore exports, positioning India as a potential global supply hub for factory automation systems. The company is evaluating global distribution strategies rather than focusing solely on neighboring markets.

This reflects a broader industry trend: using local production centers to serve international markets. For engineers and industry players, this creates opportunities for collaboration, technology transfer, and skill development in India.

Diverse Industrial Applications

The Pune plant produces inverters and other automation products for industries including automotive, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, textiles, and data centers. With factory automation being Mitsubishi Electric’s second-largest business segment in India after air conditioners, this plant is central to the company’s growth strategy.

The diverse sectoral focus highlights the flexibility of automation systems and the importance of robust local supply chains to efficiently meet varied industrial demands.

Strategic Insights and Industry Implications

Mitsubishi Electric’s localization strategy reflects a growing trend among global companies: India is increasingly seen as a competitive engineering and manufacturing base. Local sourcing reduces lead times, lowers costs, mitigates supply chain risks, and develops a skilled workforce.

As an automation professional, I believe this approach accelerates the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies in India, supporting innovation and creating a resilient industrial ecosystem.
