Rockwell Automation Unveils New Berlin as Home for Its “Factory of the Future”

Rockwell Automation Confirms New Berlin as Site for “Factory of the Future”

Rockwell Automation has officially selected New Berlin, Wisconsin, as the location for its next-generation manufacturing campus—often described by the company as a “factory of the future.” The announcement was made during a recent earnings call, signaling a major milestone in Rockwell’s long-term domestic manufacturing strategy.

As a global leader in industrial automation, Rockwell’s site selection reflects not only geographic convenience, but also strategic intent around digital manufacturing, supply chain resilience, and advanced production models.

A Greenfield Project Designed for Scale and Flexibility

The proposed facility will be built on a greenfield site in southeast Wisconsin and is expected to exceed 1 million square feet of combined factory and warehouse space. Once completed, it could become Rockwell Automation’s largest manufacturing campus worldwide.

From an engineering perspective, starting with a greenfield location is significant. It allows Rockwell to design the plant architecture around modern automation principles—including modular production lines, high levels of connectivity, and future-ready infrastructure—rather than adapting legacy layouts.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure Advantages

According to company representatives, the New Berlin site was chosen for its access to regional transportation, utilities, and industrial infrastructure. These factors are critical for large-scale automation manufacturing, where logistics efficiency and power reliability directly affect operational performance.

In my view, this choice aligns well with the increasing demand for localized, high-efficiency manufacturing in North America, especially as companies seek to reduce lead times and mitigate global supply chain risks.

Part of a $2 Billion Commitment to U.S. Manufacturing

The new campus is a cornerstone of Rockwell Automation’s previously announced five-year, $2 billion investment in domestic manufacturing. This initiative goes beyond physical plants—it also includes investments in talent development, digital infrastructure, and smart manufacturing technologies.

Notably, Rockwell also confirmed the purchase of a Mequon facility that it had been leasing, further strengthening its manufacturing footprint in Wisconsin. Together, these moves demonstrate long-term confidence in U.S.-based industrial production.

Engineering Insight: Why This Truly Is a “Factory of the Future”

While Rockwell has not yet released detailed technical specifications, the term “factory of the future” strongly suggests the deployment of:

  • Software-defined automation architectures

  • Integrated digital twins and data analytics

  • High levels of OT–IT convergence

  • Scalable, flexible production cells

As an automation engineer, I see this project as more than expansion—it’s likely a living showcase of Rockwell’s own technologies applied at scale. Such facilities often become reference models for customers pursuing Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing transformations.

What to Expect Next

Rockwell Automation stated that specific site and design details will be disclosed during the formal city application and approval process. These details will be closely watched by the automation industry, as they may reveal how Rockwell envisions the next decade of manufacturing.

For customers and partners alike, this project signals that Rockwell is not just selling automation solutions—it is actively proving them in its own operations.
